Jibhi-Shangarh road trip

Have you ever wondered what life in Himachal villages is like or what the other side of the coin looks like? How peaceful and quiet these villages are, and what it feels like when time passes slowly?

This September, we had to explore just that. We planned a 6-day road trip to Jibhi and Shangarh from Delhi. We did not plan too much. We just booked our accommodation, packed our bags, and off we went!

Day 1

We started from Delhi early in the morning. As per the maps, the distance from Delhi to Jibhi is a 9-hour drive. But the last 2 hours of this drive are on a one-way road. Either your car has to go back or the other one does. It took us 11 hours to reach Jibhi. We were so tired when we reached there. We checked into our Airbnb, had dinner, and went to sleep.

Day 2

We just relaxed and took it easy. We slept in, had a late breakfast at the Airbnb, and just sat on the balcony for hours, enjoying the mountain views. In the evening, we went on a hike and explored a local café. It was relaxing and rejuvenating, just as expected.

Day 3

We hired a taxi in the morning and went to explore Serolsar Lake. The road from Jibhi to Jalori Pass, where the trek to the lake begins, was not in good shape. That is why we decided to hire a taxi rather than tire ourselves out. The trek is also around 4 hours long, so we did not want to exhaust ourselves even before starting.

We started the trek, and since we do not get much time for physical activities back home, the first hour of trekking was tiring. There is a viewpoint about an hour from the starting point of the trek, which offers 360-degree views of the Pir Panjal and the Great Himalayan Range. We spent a few minutes there, just sitting on the bench.

Then we trekked for another 2 hours through the forest, and when we saw the lake for the first time, it was reward enough. The lake was glistening and surrounded by trees. There is a temple in one corner and a cliff overlooking the lake on the other. Luckily, we were the only ones there. We spent about an hour just listening to the birds and insects before heading back. On the way to Jibhi, we stopped at a riverside café.

Day 4

We headed towards Shangarh, and it was a 3-hour drive. The road conditions to Shangarh are good except for the last 7 km. This stretch is full of mud and deep potholes filled with water, and our car just managed to get through.

When we reached there, we fell in love with the views from our stay at first sight. The famous Shangarh Meadows were also visible from the property. We spent the rest of the day exploring the stay. There are many new homestays coming up, and it seemed to us that this village would also change because of the hype it is getting.

Day 5

We went to the Shangarh Meadows today. We packed our lunch and snacks and set out to explore the meadows. We had never seen such vast grasslands in the mountains before. As far as the eye could see, there was grass everywhere. On one side, cattle were grazing peacefully. We spent the whole afternoon eating, lying on the grass, and just relaxing.

Day 6

Once again, it was a relaxing day. We had poori-aloo for breakfast and then just read a book. In the afternoon, we went to a local waterfall. The road was a little broken, but it was fun getting there. And then it was back to Delhi the very next day.

Observations about Jibhi & Shangarh

• The road from Aut to Jibhi is not in good condition. It is quite tiring to drive, although road work is currently underway.
• The last 7 km to Shangarh are also difficult to drive. The road has deep potholes filled with water, and hatchbacks might get stuck.
• Shangarh Meadows are something that will make you want to come back as soon as you leave.
• The majority of the treehouse Airbnbs we saw are in Tandi Village and not in Jibhi. Tandi Village is 7 km uphill from Jibhi.

Wrapping Up

It was a quiet, peaceful trip, and the main motive was to relax, rejuvenate, and do nothing. It was a successful one.
